Adults who Drink and Drive

Measurement Period: 2018
This indicator shows the percentage of adults who report driving when they have had perhaps too much to drink at least once during the 30 days prior to the survey.

Why is this important?

Drivers with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above the national legal limit of 0.08% are guilty of driving under the influence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 28 people die in a motor vehicle crash that involve an alcohol-impaired driver in the United States. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion (CDC). There is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints as a public health intervention to reduce the harms associated with impaired driving.
