Substance Use
Substance use refers to the use of tobacco and psychoactive substances, such as illicit drugs, prescription drugs, and alcohol, which can lead to dependence. The inappropriate use of substances is a preventable health issue that can lead to addiction and other health problems.
Decrease the prescription drug overdose mortality rate.
General
- Increase advocacy for better treatment coverage within insurance plans
- Assure affordable treatment, adequate treatment, and comprehensive treatment
- Continue the education efforts to destigmatize those who have addiction problems
- Identify early youth abusing substances and get them into facility treatment and recommended resources
- Continue emphasis on treatment and not legal consequences
- Increase funding for treatment to underserved populations, including indigent and uninsured
- Continue evidence based education efforts including building grass roots coalitions at the community level
Prescription Drugs
- Educate the public on the issues including: there are other ways to treat pain; you do not have to fill a prescription for as many pills as prescribed; opioids can be addictive; proper disposal of opioids can prevent addictions; and family members and visitors to your home may take opioids from your medicine cabinet
- Increase education to physicians on prescription drug prescribing guidelines and discussing alternative pain management options
